Captain gracious in defeat and takes responsibility of quarterfinal loss to England

A disappointed Fiji Airways Fijian 7s captain Seremaia Tuwai says, he will take responsibility of their 19-17 loss to England in the Cup quarterfinal of the Paris 7s last night.

Speaking to World Rugby after the devastating loss, Tuwai said it was his decision to kick the ball which saw England regain possession to run in their winning try.

“It was a decision I made as a captain that cost us that game,” he said.

“I kicked that ball which we shouldn’t have kicked but things like that happen when we are playing. We’ll go back and try to come out better in the next game.”

Tuwai said the tournament is still going on and he has faith that anything could happen and they could still win the Series.

“I thank God for everything and the opportunity to play in this beautiful place.

“It didn’t go our way but we are thankful and we will try again in the next game.”

The Gareth Baber-coached side’s chances of winning the 2017/18 World Sevens Series now depend on the progress of South Africa.

During the halftime break head coach Baber stressed to the players the need to take control.

“Move the ball around and the space will come,” he said.

Baber also warned the players to be aware of their offloads as the opposition was also out to make intercepts.

Robust winger Eroni Sau opened Fiji’s account with a try which was not converted and England hit back to take a 7-5 lead before Vatemo Ravouvou scored right on halftime for the 12-7 lead.

Tuwai opened the second half with a try before England struck back with tries to Dan Norton and Captain Tom Mitchell.

Meanwhile, Paula Dranisinukula had to leave the field in the second half due to a leg injury which was troubling him.

The powerhouse forward is likely to be rested and this could see 13th player Mesulame Kunavula coming in to play.
