There has been praise for new Government initiatives to help Fijian families.

Chief among these initiatives is the $1000 grant to a mother of a newborn baby erning $30,000 and below per annum.

Other initiatives are the five-day paternal leave and five-day family care leave, which were announced by Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum when he handed down the 2018-2019 National Budget on Thursday night.

Serenia Keto, 26, a mother-of-two of Naibalebale, Viwa, Yasawa, welcomed the initiative.

“What a joy to receive that news when announced. We thank the Government and they will be blessed,” she said.

“The vision for the future generation will be better in terms of their upbringing, but this does not motivate us to produce more babies.

“We work with God’s plan, but generally this is great news.”

Her husband, Suka Leto, 29 of Waikete, Nakelo, Tailevu, said: “I will be entitled to have more time with the family with five days of family care leave.”

Serenia’s mum, Semaena Maria, 49, said: “They (the kids born in the New Year) are the lucky babies. They have benefits we did not have during our parenting days.”

Sharmila Gounder, 30, of Navakai, Nadi, said: “That is good incentive especially to assist all Fijian mothers, my thoughts go to the mothers who need this most.

“There are some mothers who need this when it comes to parenting. We used to hear a lot during our mother’s time and these kids now are better off,” said the mother-of-three.

“It is something like the dole system they have overseas.”

Her husband, Jonny Singh Rupeni, 34, said: “No child will be born with worries, (there is) money in the bank. I wish this was introduced when my wife had her first child.”
