Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has acknowledged the support of the Shree Sanatan Pratinidhi Sabha in the field of education and social welfare in Fiji.

Speaking at the 59th Sanatan Annual Convention in Samabula Primary School, Suva, yesterday, Mr Bainimarama said when disaster struck Fiji, Santan members were always on standby to attend to Fijians in need and extend a helping hand.

“Thank you for extending your assistance in recent times to those of our fellow citizens affected by the back to back cyclones of Josie and Keni,” he said.

“Once again many of those who lost their loved ones, their homes or possessions or had their businesses and farms or had plantations damaged were able to benefit from the assistance of the Sanatan.”

He said the Sanatan community had set a good example to all communities in Fiji, on the importance to support each other when any tragedy strikes.

Mr Bainimarama said he appreciated the invitation to speak at the convention on the theme ‘Addressing climate change through moral values.’

“It isn’t often that we see that type of threat being cast as a moral challenge, but of course it is,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Because at its most basic, it is about the moral obligations of those nations that have benefitted the most from the industrial age to assist those nations that are most vulnerable to its impacts.

“Also the moral obligation of us all, individually and collectively to do what we can to reduce the climate threat and protect and preserve the planet that is our only home.”

He said Fiji’s lead role to lead the global response towards climate change was a success.

“We brought the world together last November at COP23 in Bonn to continue the job of implementing the work programme for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that was decided in the Paris Agreement of 2015.”

PM’s leadership praised

Shree Sanatan Pratinidhi Sabha president Sarju Prasad said the Sanatan Community was proud of Mr Bainimarama’s leadership role to protect humanity from the dangers of climate change.

Mr Prasad said the Sanatans of Fiji stood and acknowledged Mr Bainimarama’s noble pursuit.

“Sanatans of Fiji are proud of their contribution and commitment to multiracialism and nation building, our effort to promote peace, progress and prosperity for all Fijians is built in our culture and our tradition,” he said.

“We will continue these values to the best of our ability as all times.”

The three-day convention ends tomorrow.
