The crime prevention aspect of the Digicel Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival has borne fruit with the installation of 12 CCTV camera sets at various locations in Labasa.

Labasa and Savusavu Town Council Special Administrator Vijay Chand thanked the carnival committee for the installation.

During the opening of the week-long carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa after a float procession from Y-Corner yesterday, Mr Chand said the installation was done at a cost of more than $35,000 to monitor the Central Business District (CBD).

“Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility and not only of the Police force or members of the Duavata Northern Crime Prevention committee,” Mr Chand said.

“It starts from the home because everyone is directly or indirectly involved in ensuring that the community they live in is a crime free one.

“We are occasionally confronted with petty crimes such thefts, assaults and robbery with violence, but the question here is that who is responsible to address some of these minor but  serious issues.

“I strongly believe that Police cannot do this job alone; therefore it’s the community that needs to play its part actively support the law enforcers carry out the job.

“Everyone is encouraged to report to Police and crime prevention committee on any form of illegal activities concerning your community and the town.”

Labasa Town Council is anticipating rapid and enormous development ahead in line with growth throughout the country.

There are eight queen contestants and five kings.
