Members of the public are strongly encouraged to be part of the Capital Markets Week (CMW) that begins today and ends on Friday.

The event launch today is at 11am at the Reserve Bank of Fiji, Tower 11 Conference Room. (Refer to programme)

The week-long event will focus on creating public awareness on the investment opportunities available in Fiji’s capital markets.

Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Ariff Ali said: “It is one week where all the key stakeholders of the capital markets industry are under one roof for people to enjoy free advice and take advantage of Government incentives for tax-free returns.

“This is also an opportunity for individuals and communities to grow their savings to meet their future goals.

“As part of our role to regulate and develop Fiji’s capital markets, the Reserve Bank is partnering with capital market intermediaries and stakeholders to host Fiji’s first CMW.

“Two key events during the week are the CMW Exposition and Fiji’s inaugural National Capital Markets Quiz Competition for secondary schools.”

The target audience for the CMW includes school students, land lease recipients, young professionals and high net-worth individuals.

i] CMW Exposition (“Expo”)

The CMW Expo involves capital markets stakeholders setting up information kiosks at the FNPF Downtown Boulevard.

“We welcome the general public and school groups to take this opportunity to come down and meet with these capital market intermediaries to learn more about investing in the capital markets.
“The goal of the CMW expo is to allow the public to explore how they can make their money work for them and inculcate a sense of saving for the future.”

[ii] 2018 National Capital Markets Quiz Competition

The quiz was open to all secondary schools in Fiji and had been organised in three rounds: Rounds one and two were email quizzes, from which the top four finalist schools representing the Central/Eastern, Western and Northern Divisions were selected to compete in the national finals in Suva during the CMW.

The top four finalists are Jasper Williams High School (Western Division), Labasa Sangam SKM College (Northern Division) and Bhawani Dayal Arya College and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School (Central/Eastern Division).

The national finals will take place tomorrow at 6pm at the University of the South Pacific’s Japan-Pacific ICT Centre.

What people can expect:

Mr Ariff said investing in the capital markets pays returns just as putting money in a savings account earns interest.

“In addition, most returns you get from capital markets investments are tax-free.

“During the Capital Markets Week, the public will be able to meet with stakeholders at the CMW Expo to get more information about products and services offered by capital market intermediaries and start planning and making investments to secure their future.

“During the expo, certain institutions will also run promotions to attract investments.

“We encourage anyone who has capacity to save and those who are working on some long term financial goals to come down to the expo and take advantage of the available services.

“We especially encourage students and parents to use this week to invest money for the future whether it be for further education or starting their own business when they leave school.”
