Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu visited kava farms in Sawaieke, Gau last week and saw firsthand the rural millionaire project that has eventuated as a result working together.

The rural of millionaire project is the result of a joint collaboration between the Government, the church and the vanua which started four years ago.

More than 40 farmers of Sawaieke are part of this farming project of which each farmers planted more than 1,000 kava plants in order to achieve their individual aims like building their homes and upgrading their standard of living.

“On behalf of Government I would like to thank you all for committing yourselves in this rural millionaire project which has come to fruition today,” Mr Moroivalu said.

“I am very thankful to the support given by the elders and the church especially the spiritual advocacy by the Talatala Qase of Lomaiviti e Cake Reverend Tevita Vuniwaqa.”

More than four homes have been built by the youths through this rural millionaire programme and each individual has their own goals to achieve.

The turaga ni koro of Sawaieke, Akariva Nabati said the church and the vanua had been the guiding light to the youths, enabling them to lead discipline life and using their time well.

“I am thankful to Government and the vanua working together with the church in driving these youths to achieve their dreams through the rural millionaire farming program,” Mr Akariva said.

The rural millionaire programme was initiated by the Government through the Minister of Agriculture and the Commissioner Eastern’s Office.

The kava or yaqona farms owned by the youths of Sawaieke is worth millions of dollars and is in line with the Government policy of making good use of their resources and eradicating poverty.
