The former National Federation Party provisional candidate, who was taken in for questioning following allegations of rape, has been admitted in hospital.

The provisional candidate was arrested on Thursday night following the rape allegations.

On Friday morning he complained of chest and body pains.

The 66-year-old was announced as an NFP provisional candidate with the first batch of candidates on February 2.

NFP party leader Biman Prasad has confirmed that the former provisional candidate had resigned on Friday, June 29, from the party as a provisional candidate and member of NFP after his arrest.

“That was the right thing to do and the party accepted his resignation because we do not condone such allegations against any one associated with the party,” Mr Prasad said.

“Therefore the provisional candidate is no longer associated with NFP.”

In his resignation letter, the former candidate stated: “I wish to express that there have been certain allegations made against me and they may be damaging to the reputation and integrity of the National Federation Part and myself.

“I therefore do not want the NFP’s name to be tarnished and need time to concentrate on clearing my name.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the former party provisional candidate was still in hospital.

She confirmed that he was taken in for questioning in relation to an alleged rape of a widow.

Ms Naisoro had earlier confirmed: “A 66-year-old of Nadi was arrested on June 28th for allegedly raping a 53-year-old woman in her home in Nasinu.

“It is alleged the suspect had asked to rest at the victim’s home after attending a wedding in Suva.

“The victim lives alone and after 9pm it is alleged the suspect turned up at the victim’s residence and asked if he could sleep because he was tired.

“It is alleged that the victim was inside her room when the suspect knocked on her bedroom door where he forced himself on her.

“He is alleged to have assaulted her before raping her. The victim later managed to free herself and locked herself in the bathroom where she raised alarm.”
