Rape and Sexual Offences Statistics

Twenty-two people have been charged with a total of 37 counts of separate alleged incidents last month.

This was revealed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP)stating that the data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.

The data relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the DPP throughout June.

The offences were rape (28), attempted rape (1), abduction with intent (2), defilement (3), and sexual assault (3).

There were 22 victims of the 37 separate alleged incidents of whom 15 victims were under the age of 18 years.

There was 1 male victim and 21 female victims while all accused persons were male.

There were 12 alleged incidents where the victims and the accused were related to one another.

In one incident a 75-year-old man was charged with raping his 3-year-old granddaughter, and in another incident a 43-year-old father was charged with the rape of his 14-year-old daughter who fell pregnant after the incident.

There were two separate alleged incidents where 59-year-old and 38-year-old uncles were charged with raping their 8-year-old and 9-year-old nieces.

There was another alleged incident where a 29-year-old uncle was charged with raping his 12-year-old nephew.

There were two alleged incidents of marital rape where a 32-year-old and a 43-year-old were charged with the rape of their 23-year-old and 36-year-old wives.

In a separate alleged incident a 33-year-old man was charged with multiple counts of rape of his 13year-old stepdaughter and 14-year-old niece. The accused was also charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm. (NB: The offence of act with intent to cause grievous harm is recorded separately).

There were two separate alleged incidents where a 30-year-old was charged with the rape of his 13 year-old cousin while a 23-year-old was charged with defiling his 15-year-old cousin.

In another alleged incident a 33-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 13-year-old adoptive sister.

One accused, also known as the leader of the “Jezreel Lion of Judah” church and who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for rape convictions in 2017, was charged for a separate offence of sexual assault.

There was one alleged incident where a 23-year-old school teacher was charged with defilement of a 15-year-old pupil.

There was one alleged incident where a 29-year-old was charged with the attempted rape of his 20 year-old girlfriend. The accused was also charged with assault. (NB: The offence of assault is recorded separately).

Three cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed. One case was withdrawn after the victim admitted to making a false complaint, another case was withdrawn after the victim left the country and the third case was withdrawn because of insufficient evidence.
