Fiji last won the Melrose Cup, competed for every four years in the Rugby World Cup Sevens, in 2005 in Hong Kong.

And Fiji Airways Fijian 7s squad member Leone Nakarawa says it’s time to bring the Melrose Cup after 13 years.

He made the comment as the Gareth Baber –coached side departed for Salt Lake City, Utah, USA yesterday to prepare for the RWCS in San Francisco on July 20-22.

The France-based Racing 92 lock forward said the onus is on the reps to deliver for king and country.

“We all agree that Fiji need the Melrose Cup after 13 years,” he said.

“That’s the responsibility for us to achieve and we can’t wait for another four years.

“And there’s no excuse as only the best 12 out of the 16 of us will be tasked for the job.

“We need to absorb the pressure and work hard in big tournaments and we need to prepare well in the next two weeks.”

Nakarawa played at the RWCS 2013 in Moscow where they lost to New Zealand in the Cup semifinal. But he was a member of the Ben Ryan –coached side which won the 2016 Rio Olympics sevens rugby gold medal.

“I did promise myself to keep trying after falling short at the RWCS in Moscow.

“I’ve been looking forward ever since to lift the Melrose Cup,”he said.

The 30-year old Mokoisa, Tavuki, Kadavu native is working hard to make the final 12.

Since the inaugural tournament in 1993, Fiji lifted the Melrose Cup twice in 1997 and 2005.
