High Court Refers Mother Charged With Infanticide For Psychiatric Assessment

A woman who is charged with one count of infanticide has been referred for a psychiatric assessment by the Lautoka High Court yesterday.

Neha Rukshar Ali, the 24-year-old mother of Nawaka, Nadi, appeared before Judge Aruna Aluthge.

The suspect was represented by Nimita Sharma of Legal Aid while Siteri Naria represented the prosecution.

Judge Aluthge asked the court if the suspect had been referred to a Psychiatrist for an assessment.

Ms Naria told the court that there was no such record on the file.

Judge Aluthge told the state that in cases of infanticide it was mandatory for the accused to be referred for a psychiatric assessment.

The suspect was further remanded at the Natabua Corrections Facility.

The case has been adjourned to July 17 for mention.
