The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) will appreciate if the information they release to the public is given first preference over those spread as fake news.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem stressed this point yesterday during the Fijian Elections Office and Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Forum on Electoral Processes in Suva.

He made the comments in refernece to a question by Tikina Naitasiri representative, Vasiti Loki, who asked a question based on fake news.

She asked: “How will you deal with fake news and how will you work towards ensuring that fake news does not dominate the events related to the elections?

“There can always be a stage during the election that information can be sabotaged because of fake news. A lot of people make decision from the fake news,” Ms Loki said.

Mr Saneem said any information released from the Fiji Elections Office (FEO) was true.

“There are official channels where we publish our information and they should be given the first line of credibility and not any information that is tweeted or re-tweeted by a political party or anybody,” Mr Saneem said.

“Anything that is published by us we will appreciate. Of course, I would not want to step in at the moment and propose anything yet because there is a threat to an electoral process from fake news.

“There is a counter argument that is there in terms of the right to the freedom of expression. There is another counter argument that there is a right to freedom of speech, but also a limitation.”

Mr Saneem also said members of the public must always ask where the particular information was coming from, and if they were credible. Edited by Percy Kean
