Fiji is ready to play host to the biggest event ever hosted in the country following the signing of the two major venues between Government and the resort heads yesterday.

The 52nd Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank will be held here from May 2 – 5 in 2019.

Permanent Secretary for Civil Service and Acting Permanent Secretary for Forests Bernadette Welch formalised the InterContinental Fiji Golf and Spa and the Sheraton Fiji Resort.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa’s  General Manager Andrew Davidson and Marriott’s Multi Property Vice President for Fiji and Samoa Neeraj Chadha signed the agreements with Ms Welch.

The two resorts would be the two main venues for most of the events that would be running for ADB with other properties on Denarau also being used.

Government finance ministers, who are governors of the ADB will meet at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa.

The remainder of the meetings would be held at the Sheraton Fiji Resort and Spa and The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa.

“The annual meeting consists of six to seven governors of the ADB who are finance ministers of the member countries.

“Also there are other meetings on the margin:

“The three days will be full of activity.

“It will be the largest conference Fiji has ever hosted with close to 4000 delegates attending and around 300 media organisations.”

The delegates include ADB member countries representatives, civil society, people from the private sector and banking institutions.

Most will occupy hotels on Denarau Island, in other parts of Nadi and down to the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and InterContinental.

“It will be an opportunity to showcase Fiji as a venue for hosting major international events.”

Ms Welsh said the events that would be held at the InterContinental would be “very discreet”.

“It is huge for Fiji and the other thing is the people attending will be cross sector and not just bankers so there will be a lot of broad interest.”

Mr Davidson said for InterContinental to have ADB governors meeting was a major opportunity to showcase Fiji, the resort, Natadola Bay and give them that real Fiji an experience, we are so famous for.

“Never mind the economic side as while it is good to bring business into the country, it is extremely wonderful to have those calibre of guests coming to meet in Fiji and host them here at InterContinental.”

Mr Chadha said it was an absolute pleasure for him and the hotel to sign the ADB contract.

“We are certainly looking forward to this prestigious conference coming to Fiji.

“Along with my team, we will make sure we deliver a brilliant experience for delegates and the international media.”
