Cases of child negligence encouraged Miss Janta Tek Limited Denisha Govind to be part of the Digicel Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa.

The 15-year-old of Naodamu was over the moon when she was crowned the winner in the Miss Teen category among the eight contestants on Friday night.

The Year 11 student of Labasa Sangam College said child negligence often led to child abuse and death.

“A recent case reported in the media was about a young mother who abandoned her newborn baby girl at Labasa market,” Denisha said.

“I think child negligence is caused by poverty, unplanned pregnancy and not having proper information about babysitters and caregivers when hiring.

“Children deserve to have family support and the right care.”

The youngest of two siblings and only daughter of her parents who are teachers by profession said she was confident of her chances during the carnival.

“The weeklong carnival experience was educational and challenging,” she said.

“I would like to dedicate this win to my family, sponsor and friends. My message to young people like me is that there are a lot of opportunities available in life; if you have any problem access service provided by the Government who can help you to overcome challenges.”
