Coaching and guidance from her father, who is serving a jail term, enabled 21-year-old Cema Bolawaqatabu to win the 2018 Vodafone Sigatoka Coral Coast Carnival crown.

She paid tribute to the “beacon of her life” yesterday. Cema’s father, Osea, is a former Director for the Ministry of Agriculture.

Her mother, Vasiti, said during the week he was coaching his daughter from the corrections facility.

Mrs Bolawaqatabu said: “Her dad was with her all the way. No doubt we are proud of her achievement. I am happy despite the fact that she entered the contest a bit late, but it was her dream to enter this after all.

“When she was a little girl it was her dream to be part of the pageant. She would practice with her siblings at home to enact a pageant, sort of Miss Hibiscus environment. They would ask her all sorts of question just like it is done a stage.

“She has been preparing for this. It is a dream comes true for her to be in the pageant. She is hardworking. In her studies she continues and tries to make things perfect.”

Cema hails from Nasigatoka Village in Nadroga and has maternal links in Kadavu.

“We thank the family and tikina for the support in the week-long event,” Mrs Bolawaqatabu said.

Cema was sponsored as Miss Jubaniwai Sudesh Transport & Company.

She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Land Management and Human Resources Management from the University of the South Pacific with the Toppers scheme. She is the third of five siblings, which includes two brothers and two sisters.

Cema now looks forward to representing the town at the TFL Miss Fiji Pageant 2018 to be held in Rakiraki at the end of the year.
