The Homes of Hope family is thrilled with the show of support from the Government in the 2018-2019 National Budget.

The organisation was allocated $200,000 in the form of a grant for assistance programme for residential homes where victims of sexual abuse, sexual violence and sexual trafficking are given a wide range of support. This includes a safe shelter, legal advice, medical care, counselling and skills training and empowering these victims with a new start on life.

The Home’s national director, Turenga Nakalevu, said the contribution would help towards key priority areas in campus and community programme work.

She said to fully operate its residential and community programmes, Homes of Hope needed to run on a budget close to $1.4 million.

“This entails our safety net community awareness and training programme as well as our campus restoration, and empowerment programme,” Mrs Nakalevu said.

“We have capacity to accommodate 25 mums and their children at the home.

“We are also working with our reintegrated mums and girls in the community.”

Ms Nakalevu said.the goal of the Home was to help these survivors heal from their trauma and have a fresh start of hope, freedom, dignity and life.

“The Home runs an extensive programme of restoration and empowerment,” she said,

This includes trauma counselling, life skill and hard skill training, financial literacy, early childhood education for the survivor’s children, legal and medical assistance, food and housing, mothering training, mentoring and work attachment programme,” she said.

Ms Nakalevu also highlighted that the programme worked well for the beneficiaries as it was tailored to their suitability with consideration to the level of trauma, education background, realistic aspirations, informed choices, and duration of their stay.

She said while the Government’s contribution was significant and appreciated, the Home was still looking towards the people and businesses of Fiji for support toward their operation.
