The eradication of the use of plastic bags was the focus of an event at Moto Sanatan Shammelan School in Ba last Friday.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala officiated the launch of the lunchbox ceremony, in which 35 schools participated.

He said the rise in the use and burning of plastic bags was a major concern for Fiji and this was the highlight of the launch ceremony.

Mr Bala said schools played an important role in the initiative.

“This is built towards the greater vision and the mission of the Government in beating pollution caused by plastics,” he said.

The Ministry of Education is conducting competitions such as poster designs and oratory contests relating to the usage of plastic bags.

Mr Bala acknowledged the initiative and said that more awareness would be created in communities and schools.

“This will create awareness every day rather than just marking an important date, such as the World Environment Day,” he said.

Under the lunchbox initiative, students have been provided with a lunch box and each lunch box which will be used instead of using plastic and lunch wrappers.

“Now you will own a lunchbox to be reused every day and help your teachers and school practice zero burning,” Mr Bala said.

Vatulaulau Sanatan Dharm School Year 7 student, Varanisese Tabualovoni, said she was happy of the new initiative.

“If we are using containers then we are heading in the right direction,” she said.

Arya Kanya Pathshala Year 7 student, Risha Riddhi Sharma, said the burning of plastic bags was a major concern for our nation.

She said the new initiative would lead to less pollution.
