PM Warns On Voting Ploys

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has warned voters that some parties and candidates are openly encouraging them to vote along religious or ethnic lines.

He has described the idea as backwards thinking which risks “the unity that Fijians as a society had forged by working together”.

Mr Bainimarama made the comment while speaking at the 2018 annual pooja (prayers) at the Mahadevi Temple at Vuci, Nausori, Saturday night.

“As I said in the Ba Provincial Council Meeting just last month, religion and ethnicity should never be exploited to sow division and hate,” he said.

The idea, he said, was fundamentally against the very nature of not only any religion, but of their very democracy.

Seeing politics through a lens of homogeneity, he said, was dangerous as history had already proven here in Fiji. “Instead of shamelessly weaponising differences to divide us, I ask that all Fijians make responsible decisions; decisions that aren’t only skin-deep.

“Doing so will continue to move our nation forward. Unified together as one, we are lifting families, and together, we are lifting Fiji.”

Mr Bainimarama said congregations such the one at the Mahadevi Temple, Vuci, played an invaluable role in shaping their youth, instilling society with values and providing a higher purpose to the people.

“You enrich Fiji’s cultural fabric, which owes both its strength and beauty to its diversity,” he said.

Prime Minister Bainimarama said when values-based organisations worked side-by-side with Government with a shared mission to better our nation, all would benefit regardless of their ethnicity, background, or faith.

For the future of the country, Mr Bainimarama asked for prayers for continued success and guidance.
