Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho is warning the public not to be swayed by the politicians who use the crime situation for their political gain.

He made this comment after claiming that some politicians use the crime situation as part of their political strategies.

“As we build up to the election a lot of politicians like to use crime situations for their political games,” he said.

“I want to assure the people of the Fiji that the crime statistics have been good. For the last two months there was reduced crime in Fiji.”

Brigadier General Qiliho said their drug operation has been successful.

“Earlier this year in January, February, March and April our statistics increased, but that was mainly due to the good work of Police officers because we went out hard on drugs,” he said.

“We did major drug operations in March where we took out $16.4 million street value of the drugs off the street in Fiji.

“We relaunched that operation again last month and we have surpassed that figure. We are waiting to finalise all the figures and I can tell you we went past the figures of the first drug operation.

“I want to reassure the people of Fiji that our crime situation is manageable and it is decreasing, in particular in May and June we have decreased the statistics again.

“I can assure the people of Fiji that we will reduce the crime. I understand that there are people who have been victims and I have heard what they have been through but we will deal with those issues.

“We are out there to deal with those issues.”
