A free trade agreement between Papua New Guinea and Fiji can enhance economic opportunities between the two countries in the future.

PNG Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, while addressing Parliament on Monday, said he was confident there were possibilities of forming an agreement between the two Melanesian countries.

Mr O’Neil said a lot of professionals from Papua New Guinea were working in Fiji and vice versa, meaning that there was a lot of experience that needed to be shared between the two countries.

He said there are economic similarities and there was a need to explore economic opportunities.

He commended the developments happening in Fiji over the past few years and for providing infrastructure that was good for economic growth.

“We must advance our free trade and investment that is central to any development of a nation,” Mr O’Neill said.

“Trade and investment between our countries is growing, a possibility of a free trade agreement between the two countries is important and I propose that the two countries look at the future free trade agreements.”

Speaking on the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) meeting, he extended an invitation to the Fijian Government to attend.

The meeting will be hosted by Papua New Guinea later in November, a meeting that consisted of 21 member countries such as the United States of America, China and Russia that cover more than half of global trade.

The meeting, he said, provided many opportunities for the Pacific region and it would discuss issues like tourism, fisheries and other economic sectors.

“We must ensure that they truly know the vulnerabilities and that the meeting will be hosted Pacific style at the same time sticking to the meeting’s agenda,” Mr O’Neill said.

“This will enhance opportunities for global activities and promote a sustainable economy in the region.

“Asian economics need to know the opportunities in the region. Our region experience economic growth and make sure it’s inclusive.

“The meeting will also include foreign affairs and trade ministers which is also an opportunity for all businesses,” said Mr O’Neill.
