Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will be at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco next weekend.

And yesterday he took time off to wish Fiji Airways Fijian 7s squad, now training in Salt Lake City, Utah, all the best.

“I’ve been invited to be at the Rugby World Cup Sevens next weekend,” Bainimarama said outside parliament yesterday.

“The message is always the same. We wish them all the best and we know that they will do their best and make our country proud.”

In his capacity as president of the Fiji Rugby Union, Bainimarama attended two major tournaments where our national team excelled.

These are the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Since the inaugural RWCS in 1993, Fiji has won the four-yearly event twice in 1997 and 2005 and could be the first team  to win it for the third team next weekend.

Fijians Support Building

Meanwhile, with almost 35,000 Fijians living in the United States and 75 per cent in California, the Fijian team know they will be well supported when they hit San Francisco next week.

At a thanksgiving dinner in the team’s base of Park City, almost 200 loyal and passionate Fijians  gather to extend their support.

Despite the growing attention, Head Coach Baber is pleased with his training base in Utah as the players have the space to maintain focus and keep their heads on the task at hand.

“We’ve got a really great training environment here” Baber said.

“It’s quiet and not as populated; we’ve got quality recovery and training facilities.

“The field is right next to our accommodation and the gym and indoor facility are really close by and it’s giving us the ability to focus.”

He will name his 12 players on Monday.
