More weighbridges are needed around the country to address the issue of overloading says Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Jonathan Moore.

While FRA is working closely with its key stakeholders to eradicate the issue of overloading, it is also continuously creating awareness and education on the same, he said.

FRA and LTA had increased its operations at weighbridges, major ports, jetties and roads in order to curb the issue. Mr Moore alluded to statistics provided by LTA in the first quarter this year where a majority of Traffic Infringement Notices were for overloading.

187 Traffic Infringement Notices were issued for overloading, he said.

“According to the LTA statistics for the first quarter of this year, 10-wheeler trucks were issued the highest number of TINs at 41 per cent followed by 12-wheeler trucks at 30 per cent and six-wheeler trucks at 24 per cent.

“In fact overloading on the road is a massive issue, we have to put it under control.”

More weighbridge talks

Mr Moore said they were in talks with LTA to bring in more weighbridges and distribute them around the country.

“Just by seeing a truck does not mean one can say it is overloaded but overloading is a big problem it degrades the structure of the road,” he said.

“We have to have a resilient grant to provide more network so over the next five to 10 years we are looking at establishing roads to increase new roads on the islands.

“With the increased numbers of vehicles on the road, we are planning to have more roads between Labasa and Savusavu. If we can do the other parts of the country it will give resilience to our road networks.

“We need to see strategic locations in the country where we can link roads to give better service to the country.”
