The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has installed 25 solar streetlights alongside Nailaga Village in Ba.

The Authority’s acting general manager electrical, Musheer Ilahi Khan in a press statement said that the FRA had invested in a system that collected and stored energy from the sun.

The energy is expected to light up a section of its arterial road through Nailaga Village.

“Fiji is a new regional leader in the adaptation of sustainable energy solutions that help protect and preserve the environment and due to the potential vulnerability to cyclones and the rise in sea levels, the Government of Fiji has adopted a prominent role in the Pacific Island initiatives to address climate change issues,” Mr Khan said.

“The 25 Orca Vertex solar lighting system for Nailaga Village has been designed in Australia, utilising NASA’s solar insolation data for Fiji and customised to meet V5 street lighting standard.

“This standalone system has been specifically designed to provide up to 13 hours of operation with 56 hours (4.3days) autonomy.”

The Energy Management Control System has been set to operate the 25 60watts LED street lights at 100 per cent from dusk till dawn.

Mr Khan said the benefits of solar energy towards the environment were measurable.

“For each year of operation, the 25 solar streetlights would use 6,570kWh of energy from the sun,” Mr Khan said.

“It would also:

– offset 3357 kilograms of carbon emission

– save electricity generator diesel consumption by 1932 litres; and is equivalent to planting 23 trees.”

Mr Khan said it was important for every individual and institution to do their part in supporting sustainable energy solutions.

“The FRA was doing just that,” he said.
