Accused is charged with rape and sexual assault

The trial of an alleged rape case on Beqa Island started yesterday before High Court Judge Justice Riyaz Humza in Suva.

The accused is charged with three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read out to him.

State prosecutor Lavenia Bogitini told the court that the complainant was in the same village on Beqa Island spending her Christmas holidays there when the alleged incidents took place between December 23 and 24, 2015. The complainant was under the age of 13 at the time.

The first prosecution witness, who is the complainant in the matter, gave evidence behind closed doors.

The accused is represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer, Krisheel Chang.

The trial continues before Justice Humza.
