A 22-year-old University of the South Pacific student charged for assaulting a Police officer and being drunk and disorderly was released on bail by the Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday.

Ratu Seru Baleivavalagi of Labasa appeared before Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci.

He told the court that he wished to seek assistance from Legal Aid Commission.

It is alleged that on July 6 (last Friday) in a public place at Labasa Town, Baleivavalagi was drunk and disorderly.

The court heard that when a Police officer Constable Vishal Naidu attended to the case, Baleivavalagi who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol assaulted him.

Police prosecutor Corporal Abinash Prasad requested Magistrate Qalinauci to release the accused on strict bail conditions because he was a son of a religious leader, who is well known in the community and he failed to recognise a Police officer because he was under the influence of alcohol.

The student provided two sureties, who were his father and uncle.

He was released on a $100 bail.

The case has been adjourned for plea on December 11 because the student studied in Suva.
