Mum Explains Late Report Of Alleged Rape

The mother of a rape complainant told the High Court in Suva yesterday that they did not report the alleged incident to Police the next day because they were still in shock.

The witness gave evidence before Justice Vinsent Perera.

She said that the accused, who is her uncle in law and the child’s grandfather, was very fond of her children and was always nice to them.

The accused is charged with three counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of indecently annoying a person.

While giving evidence, the complainant’s mother said on the night of the alleged incident on February 11, 2017 they were at a gathering in Navua when she noticed her daughter behaving in a strange manner.

She testified that her daughter was sitting on the sofa alone and not playing with the other children.

At around midnight they left the venue and drove back home she asked her daughter if she was alright and if anything had happened at the accused’s home.

The witness said when her daughter relayed to her that her grandfather had allegedly raped her inside the sitting room she was in shock and could not believe it.

She agreed with the defence that if something had happened to her daughter she would have relayed the story to her while they were still at the accused’s house.

However, she added that if children were threatened they would be too scared to speak about their experience.

The woman said she initially had doubts in her mind because she did not expect that the accused would do such things to a small kid.

She said straight after her daughter told her about the incident she texted a friend who was a Police officer and asked for advice.

She was told to report the matter to the Totogo Police Station.

The trial continues before Justice Perera today.
