FICAC Advised To Seek Interpol Help

Magistrate Waleen George has advised Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to go through Interpol if they had any difficulties locating Lolesh Sharma.

Sharma, the Sun Insurance Limited former chief executive officer, has been charged by FICAC with attempt to undue influence contrary to Section 141 of the Electoral Act.

Sharma’s case was called in the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate George yesterday.

Sharma was not present in court because he was overseas.

It is alleged that on October 4, 2017, Sharma attempted to hinder or interfere with the free exercise or performance of the political right of the employees of Sun Insurance Limited that was relevant to the 2018 General Elections.

Lawyer Adish Narayan appeared on behalf of AK Lawyers. In court, Mr Narayan said that his law firm received the summons.

The state was advised by magistrate to seek Interpol’s assistance to locate Sharma since he was out of the country.

Mr Narayan told the magistrate that he was there because his law firm received the summons, but was not informed by Sharma to represent him. He told the court that FICAC had served him with the summons and not to Sharma.

Magistrate George instructed FICAC to also serve the summons to Sharma. The matter was adjourned to September 3.
