Students of Monfort Technical Institute in Savusavu were advised to respect and protect women and children.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto highlighted this during the institute’s passing out parade yesterday.

“At this young stage of your life, you should make a commitment that you will grow up to be a person, who will respect and protect women and children,” Rear Admiral Naupoto said.

The RFMF Commander told students their strong hand should be stretched out not to harm, but to help women and children.

“If you witness a girl, who is being hurt do not allow peer pressure to make you ignore or even join in, take the side of the girl that is being hurt,” Rear Admiral Naupoto said.

“That is where a real man should stand.

Make it a destiny where Fiji is more caring, respectful and protective of our women and children. That destiny starts with you now.

“I am of the view that this is also a good time for schools and us in the military to critically asses the effectiveness of the current methodology and design of cadet training and we ask ourselves whether there is a better way,” he said.

Rear Admiral Naupoto made these comments while addressing 58 students during the cadet passing out parade in Savusavu, Vanua Levu.

“This is to be done with the sole aim of providing the best for our students,” he said.

“Let me emphasise that the training that you have completed is not meant to turn you into soldiers even though you should consider that field of career in the future.

“What the training does is to first help instill in you some important virtues like discipline, perseverance, obedience and respect that are important for you now and throughout your life.

“Secondly, the training is also intended to instill pride and a sense of patriotism for your institute and for your country as well.

“Thirdly, the training is meant to allow you to discover a little more of yourselves. Self-discovery is a vital phase of your life as you transit into adulthood.”
