Northland defeated Yasawa 30-22 in the first challenge of the 2018 HFC Bank Voreqe Bainimarama Shield at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

Northland also received $2000 while Yawasa settled for $1000.

Lautoka will challenge Northland at Ratu Cakobau Park next week.

What happened:

Both sides gave their all in the first spell as they wanted to begin the season on a high note.

Yasawa dominated play while Northland defended well.

In the 10th minute Yasawa scored through Eliki Naikusa, 5-0.

Alivereti Mocelutu kicked two penalties to put Northland in the lead, 6-5.

In the 20th minute Northland in¬creased their tally when wing Sakaraia Rokotabutabu scored their first try, converted by Moce­lutu, 13-5.

Yasawa’s Jerry Navia and Apeni­sa Ratukabu scored one try each to allow the westerners to regain the lead.

Halftime: Yasawa 15-13 Northland

Backed by the vocal crowd, the hosts came back strongly in the second spell and skipper Dan Li­gairi crashed through the Yasawa defensive line to score their second try and increase their lead 20-15.

But Yasawa scored another try to regain the lead 20-22.

A penalty to Mocelutu, put North­land on the lead again, 23-22.

Taniela Liwanacaginiwalala scored the last try to end the game at 30-22, with conversion by Moce­lutu.

Northland head coach Watisoni Ratulevu said:

“The boys are tired but I applaud them for coming back in the sec­ond half.

“We will now focus on our next game against Lautoka which we know will not be easy.”

Yasawa manager Manasa Takali said:

“We gave away lot of penalties. Northland gave us a good game and we applaud them for their effort.”
