Land of the brave

Joan McGoon, Nadi

As our multi-cultural society moves towards reconciliation and progress, choices are made to shed the extra weight and baggage.

As a tourist country, more cultures expose us to the differences and similarities that different peoples have in common.

The choice to celebrate the differences is essential.

In one culture, a lot of communication is acceptable. In another, not as tolerant.

So, as we progress as a society towards a peaceable, productive and prosperous future, we can make the choice to choose what works and what doesn’t in ensuring peace, productivity and prosperity.

Certain choices can be game changers.

And in order to be free, we need to be brave.

The land of freedom and tolerance is the land of bravery.

The Bible describes sin as enslavement.

When we read about the horror of slavery, which is not just a relic of the past, but still practiced in many places today, we find it hard to picture a worse way to live.

Death bend

Tomasi Boginiso,  Nepani, Nasinu

There have been many tragic road deaths at Drekenakelo, Kasavu, but this is the first time it has been highlighted the “Bend of Death”.

Could ideas raised previously with the authorities by residents solve the situation?

It’s about time now that the situation captures someone’s attention. Condolences to the family of the recent victims and hopefully whatever happened will be investigated by the Police.

There are more bends around the country that have recorded similar mishaps, so are we waiting for a similar incident to happen?

There are speed limits at these bends, but some drivers nowadays are just careless and their actions lead to these types of incidents.

Drivers should take precautions and be very careful.

Slave to Sin

Dharmendra Kumar,  Suva

A slave does not have the ability to control his or her own life.

The master sets the terms.

Of course, sin does not present that part of the picture during the temptation.

It is only afterward that we realise the fetters that follow violating God’s law.

The power of sin cannot be broken apart from a stronger power.

On the cross, Jesus purchased not just our salvation but our freedom from sin.

Yet too often we volunteer to go back to the chains that should have no power over our lives.

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage”

(Galatians 5:1).

Once we had no choice, but as believers when we sin, it is because we want to, not because we have to.

Amenatave Yaconisau, Delainavesi

Elections is not about criticising others and control, it’s about representatives, parties and policies.

In this competitive party system this is very hard.

Elections are rarely fought over one issue but many as we know. Currently

there is one party that can cause instability with so much stirrings in the top.

Soccer standards

Floyd Robinson,  Suva

With the FIFA World Cup over and reality settling in, shall we focus attention on how the standard of Fiji Soccer should improve to an extent that we can claim that we are the champions of the South Pacific?

Or is our standard of soccer improving at a reasonable rate?

Can Fiji soccer officials seek more technical support from neighbours Australia, New Zealand and if possible New Caledonia which comes under the world champions. Meanwhile, for now we will switch to the rugby sevens world cup in the USA.

Don’t forget to support the Fijiana team.

Who knows they may just do better than the national men’s team.

Former Natabua High Schools sportsman and Nadi resident Iliesa Tanivula may have some tricks and surprises up his sleeves.
