It’s time for Rugby House to replace head coach Iliesa Tanivula

It took less than 15 minutes for the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team to end their Rugby World Cup Sevens campaign at the AT& T Park in San Francisco yesterday.

Despite going into the game as the 7th seed, the Ana Maria Roqica, captained- side lost 19-12 to 10th seed Spain.

This had been the story of the team throughout the 2017/18 Women Sevens Series.

Against Spain, there were 7 mistackles, 6 errors committed while Spain won 11 turnovers compared to Fijiana 8.

The Fijianas’ non-performance means that all funds invested in the team’s preparations, like playing in sevens tournaments overseas and the recent high altitude training in Denver, Colorado, has all gone down the drain in a flash.

With all these failures current head coach Iliesa Tanivula should be appreciated for what he has done despite the difficulties faced.

But it’s time for the former Auckland Blues winger to step down and hand over the responsibility to someone to take control of the team and tasked to take them to the next level.

There are locals like Josateki Savou, Saiasi Fuli, Jope Tuikabe, Ro Alivereti Doviverata and Watisoni Ratulevu who are capable of taking over.

Ro Dovi recently did just it for the Fijiana 15s team when they convincingly won both their matches in the recent Australian tour.

Again, it’s time for the decision makers at Rugby House to put a close on the Tanivula era for the sake of taking Fijiana 7s team to newer heights.
