Defending champions Rewa entered this match with the need to score more but were restricted to a 3-2 win over Dreketi at Churchill Park yesterday.

The win for Rewa saw them gain six points and hoped jetsetters Nadi draw or win against Suva in a later match.

In a game which saw the Delta Tigers miss the services of key players Setareki Hughes and Amani Makoi, it was now more of a waiting game to see if they would qualify for the semifinals.

Rewa came out firing in this encounter against the Northerners with Rewa needing a good win.

Rewa’s Iosefo Verevou proved the difference when he latched on to a back pass from Kalasito Posiano to hammer home a 30 metre drive that caught Dreketi goalkeeper Petero Tamaniabo by surprise.

Rewa led 1-0 at the break.

Rewa sensing they needed more goals came out firing in this spell and it took them seven minutes before they went 2-0 up with a blunder from Tamaniabo.

A cross by substitute Josefa Neibuli could not be handled by Tamaniabo and Sairusi Nalaubu was on hand to capitalize.

Rewa furthered their cause in the 69th minute when Dreketi defender Usaia Tadu infringed inside the penalty area and was sent off after a second bookable offence.

Taione Kerevanua scored from the spot for to lead 3-0.

The lead was however cut short when a surge down the right flank saw Joseva Bolakivei scored.

Rewa’s lethargic play in defence was the cause for Dreketi’s second goal when a series of blunders saw Shamal Lal score past keeper Manasa Waqavou for Dreketi to draw closer, 3-2.

Rewa coach Lorima Dau;

“We missed some good chances and our players did not play up to par. But a win is a win and we have to wait and see.”

Dreketi coach Jitendra Nand;

“We missed a couple of chances but came from 3-0 down to lose 3-2.”
