Suva yesterday sent defending champions Rewa out of the INKK Battle of the Giants tournament in Lautoka with a win over Nadi.

Rewa earlier had squandered a good 3-0 lead to win 3-2 against Dreketi and left their goal difference at the hands of Suva.

The capital city had Bruce Hughes with two striking goals against the jetsetters in the second spell to see them top the pool with Nadi on second place on goal difference.

The first half was balanced out with Suva being more urgent in their approach to secure a win.

The spell was more about Nadi mounting a few attacks against Suva’s strive to notch a win.

Hughes first goal came in the 55th minute from outside the Nadi box that left Samuela Tamanisau with no chance of saving.

His second goal came six minutes later when he nailed a cross from inside the penalty box for the 2-0 win.

Suva coach Gurjeet Singh said he was proud of his players as they rose to the occasion and brought victory to the district when they needed it the most.

“This was a do or die match for us and we ensured we got the goals and defended well. It is also good to see the team scoring a lot of goals in the tournament and it is a positive sign for us going into the semifinal.”

Nadi coach Babs Khan said he rested senior players Vereti Dickson, Napolioni Qasevakatini and Patrick Joseph who were on yellow cards and did not want to risk them being out of the semifinals if they copped more.

“We lost to the better team of the day and will regroup on Tuesday for the semifinal this weekend.”
