National Security and Intelligence Director Timoci Natuva reassures Fijians to not worry about petty hate speeches made by ‘phantoms’ on social media. He said it would have no effect on Fiji’s national security.

“At the moment Fiji is very safe and this is mostly coming from the Opposition, this is the same strategy that they used before during the preparation before the National General Election back in 2014. That was happening then and happening now, so anybody can say anything on social media and nobody can pinpoint them because the phantoms are making those issues,” Mr Natuva said.

He made these statements following posts on social media allegedly inciting hatred between Fijian communities of different ethnicities.

“Social media is what people think of what the situation is like in Fiji. But as for us, we just comment using the official comments only, so as far as I am concerned, yes Fiji is safe.”

Mr Natuva viewed the comments made by people on social media as negligible and claimed the numbers of people commenting seemed irrelevant.

He said in terms of national security, Fijians and tourists had nothing to worry about.

“We also look after our tourists that are coming. It is very important that we see that the security situation is such that they are safe.”

Mr Natuva said all the relevant forces such as the Fiji Police Force and other enforcement agencies are committed in ensuring that Fiji remained safe for citizens and visitors alike.
