Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has encouraged all Fijian students to pursue their passion and take advantage of the country’s growing film industry.

He made this comment while officiating at the annual 13th Kula Film awards at Damodar City Centre on Friday night.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Kula Awards provides a platform to learn, be professionally trained and participate in the audio-visual industry through three streams of creative arts film, art, and dance.

“Many of you present this evening show that you are creative people it does not necessarily mean that one could be an actor, you can be good in directing lights or other supporting acts in movies,” he said.

“Government has been investing in the film industry, when a foreign company makes a movie in Fiji any amount of money they spend in Fiji, seven per cent of this amount will be returned to the filmmakers.”

This year, Film Fiji introduced new features and categories to the programme, including a revamped open category for budding filmmakers who have left school.

A total of 34 schools took part in the film competition, 20 in the dance competition while 30 schools competed in the arts category.
