Sixteen members of the highest caste in Hinduism (Brahmins) living in the Suva-Nausori corridor were commended for their service to the community and the religion.

The commendation came from Minister of Waterways Mahendra Reddy, who officiated at the Brahmin Brahm Bhoj function at the Gyan Mandir in Samabula, Suva, yesterday.

The function was organised by the Nabua Sanatan Branch.

“Brahmins are supposed to carry knowledge across generations,” said Mr Reddy

He added that since Brahmins were carriers of knowledge and wisdom in society, they must share and apply knowledge without any greed for benefits of any kind.

“It is my humble plea to you all to mobilise yourself in our society and protect and guide all Fijians,” Mr Reddy said.

“Our society is increasingly being subjected to values alien to us. These values need to be studied in light of our identity and who is more suitable to do so then you all,” he said when addressing the Brahmins.

The Brahmins, were retired priests, were welcomed with Tilak (dot on forehead), shawl, garland and aarti.
