An initiative by women of Naitasiri Province paid dividends when they collected $37,000 on Saturday at Valelevu Ground, Nasinu.

The women organised a two-day festival to raise funds for provincial levies (soli ni yasana); development within the province and for their own women’s provincial savings account.

Naitasiri Provincial Council chairman and parliamentarian Alivereti Nabulivou said the council was happy with the initiative by the women.

He expressed hope that the women would continue such initiatives to support the province.

Mr Nabulivou said the festival had the blessing of the council.

Present at the festival, which started on Friday, were the women from 91 villages within the 16 districts and 13 settlements of Naitasiri province.

Mr Nabulivou said women living on Naitasiri lands along the Suva-Nausori corridor were also present.

All women, he said, were asked to give $20 as their contribution to the festival.

The fundraising event was opened by the people of Nakorovatu district and closed by those with maternal links to the province.

Development

Mr Nabulivou said the main development work for the province was the planned construction of a three-storey building at Natalacagi, Vunidawa, as the new office for the council.

He said they were hoping to start construction of the new office in August.

The design plan for the new office has been passed by the council, which is now awaiting a tenancy agreement from the Attorney-General’s Office.

Office spaces at the planned building, Mr Nabulivou said, had already been booked.
