The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is now investigating complaints of provisional taxi permit recipients who may have knowingly provided incorrect information on their applications.

If a recipient is found to have made a false declaration, LTA will revoke his or her provisional taxi permit letter and refer the matter for appropriate criminal prosecution, the LTA said in statement yesterday. Revoked letters will be re-drawn via barrel lottery within their respective zones.

Furthermore, LTA urges the public not to indulge in any provisional taxi permit being sold on social media or any other form of transaction; letters are assigned to a specific person, and are useless when in the hands of someone who is not the recipient as they cannot be registered under a different name.

For the past two years, LTA has been working with various stakeholders to ensure that taxi permits are issued in a fair and transparent manner as possible.

The previous system, which was ripe with corruption and lacked any level of accountability or transparency, was patently unfair to the vast majority of applicants. The new lottery system is far and away the most equitable solution – as was evident by the more than 1500 permit recipients – the vast majority of whom were truthful in their applications. While some may irresponsibly choose to play politics with a system that has brought new levels of transparency to a once-broken process, LTA assures the public that a few mischievous actors will not spoil the system for the many hundreds of honest applicants who have gained new livelihoods for the benefit of themselves, their families, and the Fijian economy.
