Joint leader Andrew Dodt believes his bogey free opening round at the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course yesterday was a bonus.

Dodt led through most of the day with five under with fellow Australians Nick Cullen and Jarrod Felton along with Kiwi Ben Campbell but said the course with the blistery conditions was very tough.

His score included two birdies on the 1st and 5th holes on the front nine and on the 15th and an eagle on the 17th.

He said golfers needed to control the ball given the conditions and that course management was a big factor.

“It was a really, really solid round,”he said.

“I’ve always said I’m a good wind player. I mean, you’ve still got to do it.

“The last six months haven’t been that great, so it’s been nice.

“I haven’t been able to put four rounds together. I’ve put rounds together here and there, so today was a step in the right direction. That’s one with three to go.”

Dodt, who has been here on four occasions, said he really like the course.

“I think I finished third in the first year when Steven Jeffress won in 2014.

“I feel like the tee shots and second shots are most of the shots I’ve got a good eye for, and the greens roll lovely.

“All in all, what a great background, great setting, so it’s hard not to like Fiji.”

“There’s still a long way to go. Certainly a solid round to start with, so I’ve just got to keep doing what I did today and keep building on that.”
