Missing fishermen found, safe

Four men who were reported missing at sea were found in waters between Tuvuca and Katafaga islands in the Northern Lau Group yesterday morning.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the four, Kelepi Koroi, 40, Risiate Senilagakali, 35, Nimilote Ualokaloka, 27, and Jope, 40, all of Levuka Village, Lakeba, had been missing at sea since Thursday. They were found by a Police search team from Vanuabalavu. The men left their village in a fibreglass boat for a fishing trip and were expected to return on Thursday morning, but failed to do so.

“All were rescued and taken for medical check at Lomaloma Medical Centre and are now sheltering at a vacant Police barrack at Vanuabalavu awaiting their return to Lakeba,” Ms Naisoro said.

CAAF probes plane incident

The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) has started investigations to find out the cause of an aircraft accident at Nausori Airport on Thursday. An Air Wakaya aircraft – a Cessna Grand Caravan – is believed to have hit a fence at the airport while coming in to land just before 7pm.

CAAF acting chief executive officer Ajai Kumar confirmed an investigation had started to find out the cause of the accident.

He declined to comment on details about the investigation, saying it was too early to do so at this stage.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the aircraft was a 14-seater and was flown by 74-year-old chief pilot Geoffrey Lawrence. She said no injuries were recorded and the chief pilot was travelling alone.

“The Air Wakaya aircraft flew from Nadi Airport at about 6pm on Thursday and reportedly developed problems and could not land on the runway at the Nausori Airport properly,” Ms Naisoro said.

“It touched the airport fence and sustained minor damage.”

She said the cost of damage was yet to be determined.

The aircraft was cleared from the place it ended up, just short of the runway, within minutes by the airport security officers and Police officers.
