Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Government was keen on giving young people the support and proper mentorship on their artwork.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted this during the announcement of a new National Gallery of Contemporary Arts project that is anticipated to open in 2020.

He was speaking during the Arts and Plastic Dialogue at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said young talented artists often fell by the wayside because of no support or proper mentorship.

After they leave high school or the university, they do not have anyone to teach them the next level of art, so it is a loss of talent, he said.

It is a loss of productivity and they do not have the opportunity to express themselves, he added.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the gallery would provide the platform for young and talented artists to express themselves through art.

The project is a partnership between the Fijian Government and British Council.

This is through the assistance of the British High Commissioner, Melanie Hopkins.

“We have seen many fantastic art pieces like the Kula Awards and the various art competitions in high schools,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

The Art Gallery will be constructed along Victoria Parade.
