For Vilisi Rairai, the support she has been receiving from her mother has pushed her to aim high.

The 13-year-old student was among those recognised for their hard work and dedication during the Deenbandhoo Memorial School awards event.

Vilisi received the Mathematician award from Attorney-General and Minister for Education Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on Saturday night.

“I am honoured and happy to receive this award and I dedicate it to my mother who has been there for me during our dark days,” Vilisi said.

“She has been supportive and always encouraged me to my best in whatever I do,” Vilisi said.

“This is the first time I am receiving an award and it wouldn’t be possible without God. This is the first of many to come.”

The determined girl from Nabouono, in Macuata, has Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and hopes to become a doctor to help those who are also suffering from the sickness.

Her mother, Kelerayani Vakatara, said: “I am overwhelmed when I saw her walking to the stage to receive the award.

“This is a great achievement because during my days of school I never received any award.

“I am a single mother and seeing the achievements my daughter has achieved brings me pride and joy.

“My daughter wants to become a doctor and I will stand by her in whatever she decides to pursue.

“I thank God for giving my daughter the knowledge to enable her to achieve.”
