Call to ensure passenger safety

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators to ensure that passenger safety is paramount at all times.

All PSV owners must ensure that their vehicles are safety compliant and have safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and first-aid kits while in operation.

Consequently, PSV operators are being reminded that they must always have fire extinguishers which are in working condition.

There have been concerns from the commuters of the non-availability or improper placement of the fire extinguishers in PSV vehicles.

Accidents of any nature can occur at any time, thus, fire extinguishers are necessary safety equipment in the buses as it can assist in suppressing sudden fire incidents.

As a result, all PSV vehicles must be fitted with a fire extinguisher of a type and capacity that is approved by the LTA, as failure to do so may result in a fine or imprisonment under the Land Transport Act 1998.

The Land Transport Authority Code of Practice for fire extinguishers requires all omnibuses, minibuses, carriers, taxis, hires and rentals to have a 2.5kg Multi-Purpose Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher.
