Punjas Limited and Digicel Fiji will co-sponsor the 2018 National Netball Championship which starts today at the Lautoka multipurpose courts.

A total of 38 teams representing 12 districts will take part in the two-day event.

New teams competing are Wai (Nadroga West) and Wainikeli from Cakaudrove while Ba return to the fold after a lapse of few years.

Punjas Group marketing manager, Gopal Jadhav was grateful to partner Digicel in supporting the annual event for the fifth consecutive year.

“Women play netball and many of the people Punjas serves love the sport,” Jadhav said.

“So our support for netball makes perfect sense. We hope that by sponsoring netball, more girls and young women will look to the sport as one that can contribute to healthy lifestyle and provide economic opportunities for them and other families.”

Digicel Fiji regional manager West Florence Eyre said, “We have supported netball over the last five years and our past joint sponsorship also included the Super League and the International Series.”

“This commitment highlights our efforts to help Fiji Netball grow their potential player base at home and prepare them well for international Test matches and competitions.

“This event over the past four years presented a great platform for our youth players to showcase their talent and helped prepare them for international event,” she said.

“I hope our local based players will use this event to impress selectors to get a place in the Fiji training squad for the 2019 Netball World Cup and the 2021 Netball World Youth Cup.”

Netball Fiji executive Vivian Koster said, “We are thankful to our major sponsors Punjas and Digicel for their continued support for the fifth consecutive year.

“As the biggest women in sport in Fiji, the continued support of Punjas and Digicel is indicative that these corporate giants support the empowerment of women leaders in all spheres of the game i.e. administration, coaching, officiating, umpiring, etc.”

Fiji Netball will also conduct a bench official refresher programme to ensure that there are capable officials as Fiji prepares to host the Netball World Youth Cup in 2021.
