Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama became the first Prime Minister in the country’s history to set foot on Vio Island off the coast of Lautoka.

It was also a historical occasion for the people of Vio as they witnessed the opening of their new water-pipeline on Thursday.

“Mr Bainimarama became the first Prime Minister in the history of Fiji to set foot on the island for an official event ever since the colonial period,” Vio Village headman Semi Mana said.

“Mr Bainimarama kept true to his word to take time off to see the project through and being over at the island and officially opening it, spoke volumes of the kind of dedicated leader he is.

“Never in the history of this island from the colonial days till now for a Government Minister let alone a Prime Minister to grace us with his presence.

“Officially commissioning our new clean water supply really means a lot to us.”

Past governments

He said past governments never even bothered about them, all the pleas and cries of their forefathers who previously inhabited the island before passing on actually fell on deaf years.

“But I am so glad that we are a part of this generation and to have witnessed firsthand what a caring Government is all about, to see how a leader can make a promise and see that his promise to the Fijian people is fulfilled.”

His sentiments were echoed all across the island on Thursday.

As children were seen taking a cup full of water and drinking from their taps, women went about washing dishes and chatting away in the comforts of their own homes. During the course of his official address Mr Bainimarama said he understood the hardships the villagers on Vio Island went through the years of being ignored by previous Fijain governments.
