Sainimere Vosare, sponsored by Galaxy Hotel and Apartments, will advocate on backyard gardening for a healthier North at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The week-long annual event will be held at Subrail Park in Labasa beginning from August 18.

The 22-year-old, originally from Cicia in Lau, said she wants to encourage people to depend more on what they grow, because it is healthier than the fruits and vegetables at the shopping centres.

“We really don’t know how a farmer plants fruits and vegetables and how it is transported to the shopping centres,” Ms Vosare said.

“If we have our own backyard garden, we will be happy as we know what kind of fertiliser we are using, that will not harm our health.

“Moreover, we will be saving a lot of money.”

The only child in her family, she is aspiring to become an agriculture field officer.

“If I win I will work with the Labasa Town Council and help in an awareness programme on how to keep our town clean,” the Fiji National University Bachelor of Science in Agriculture graduate said.

“It is the first time for my sponsor to participate in this festival and I want to make them proud by doing my very best.

“My strength is that I can overcome any challenges and obstacles.

“Through this festival I want to gain confidence and build up on my public speaking ability.”
