On the first day of the 2018 Vodafone Hibiscus Festival King contestant Manasa Navara grabbed the first award on offer. This was for having the best research topic.

Mr Navara, sponsored by Trendy Fashions Fiji, presented a research paper on recycling and youth empowerment. The presentation was held at Suva’s Peninsula Hotel.

In his research topic, he highlighted that the youths of today only saw recycling as an environmental programme. He said youths needed to see recycling as a source of income.

“Recycling is an act of employment. It is a source of income. We also need to recycle our minds. Taking away the bad and negative things and fill it in with all the positive things.

“We need to be positive so the entire community can be positive. Recycle the bad things, let it go, and move on with positivity.”

The 21-year-old and elder of two siblings hails from Nadala, Ba, with maternal links to Korovou Village.

Mr Navara, who is a double major student at the University of the South Pacific studying Land Management and Political Science, dedicated his win to his mother.

“My mother is the reason why I am here today.

“I was brought up by a single mother and it has driven me to excel and prove people wrong about single parents and broken families,” he said.

He said the win came as a surprise because he least expected to perform his best.

“Throughout the week I was busy helping my fellow king contestants with their research and I told my co-ordinator two days before the presentation that I was not ready for it,” Mr Navara said.

“It is a great accomplishment for me and my mother.”
