A taxi driver who attempted to rape a woman in Nausori on July 10, 2013, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.

The accused Ram Ugesh, 29, was found guilty and convicted by Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne.

Ugesh was ordered to serve a non-parole imprisonment period of two years.

The court heard that at 10pm on the night of the incident, the victim was waiting for a taxi in Nausori Town to go home.

She did not have taxi fare, but intended to pay the fare when she reached home.

The accused approached her and offered her a ride, which she accepted.

When she reached her destination, the accused did not stop his taxi and when she tried to escape he chased her and grabbed her hand.

He told her in Hindi that he wanted to sleep with her while dragging her to the jungle.

But, when he stumbled on a fence and fell down, the victim managed to escape. While delivering his sentence Magistrate Somaratne said the accused was a public service transport provider and the victim had entered his vehicle because she trusted him to drop her home.

“You breached her trust by committing this offence,” he said.

“This was committed in the middle of the night and it was also shown that you used some violence when the victim tried to escape and you used force by grabbing her wrist.”

In mitigation the accused submitted that he was married with a one-year old child and was the sole breadwinner for his family.
