Brothers Malakai Tiwa and Samuela Nabenia scored a goal each as Ba beat Suva 2-0 in the Vodafone Premier League clash at Govind Park in Ba yesterday.

The win has kept their hopes of finishing second in the VPL alive which means qualifying for the OFC Champions League.

What happened: Suva came into the match trying to avenge their loss to Ba in the Battle of the Giants final. The mechanics did not turn into their liking as in the 20th minute, Tiwa drew first blood as they led 1-0.

Suva had their chances but the Ba defence were on alert. Ba goalkeeper Josaia Ratu twice fumbled the ball but quick reaction from the defenders saved the day.

Halftime: Ba 1–0 Suva.

In the 88th minute Suva defender Remueru Tekiate brought down nippy Meli Codro in the box and referee Ravitesh Behari pointed to the penalty spot. But Tiwa failed to score as his attempt was saved by Simione Tamanisau.

At the stroke of fulltime, Nabenia slotted in the second goal which caught Tamanisau napping as the Ba fans celebrate.

Big play: Codro, Saula Waqa and Junior Naren Rao played crucial roles in midfield as they spearheaded Ba’s attack.

Star turn: Tiwa and Nabenia’s goals which were a delight to watch.

Comment: Ba manager Arvind Singh said: “Three points is very important. Despite the fitness level we managed to score two goals. Now we aim to finish in second spot in the VPL with a few match remaining.”

Suva coach Gurjeet Singh said: “Not a good result for us as there were big gaps. We gave away two easy goals. There is a big question mark on the team making it to the O-League but we will give other players some game time too.”
