The Hibiscus Event Group (Inc) chairperson Hirdesh Prasad greeted the crowd of more than 500 people on Saturday with a big ‘Bula Nasinu’.

The ideal, sunny weather conditions added to the spectacular launch of the 2018 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival at the Valelevu Ground.

Along with patrons from Suva, Nausori and visitors, the Nasinu residents cheered and welcomed the festival launch with big cheers.

The mother of all festivals is being hosted outside of the Capital City for the first time.

Mr Prasad said the venue hunt had been going on for the last two months before Valelevu Ground was confirmed to host the festival.

It is the first time since 1956 that the annual popular pageant is held outside of Suva.

He said with the theme for this year, the Hibiscus Festival kicked-off inspired from the 2017 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival Miss Charity, Karalaini Korovulavula’s advocacy message.

Mr Prasad said the Five R’s (Reuse, Refuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Reduce) was related to last year’s theme because the environment was important, and it was part of our lives.

“We are very much in need of good action each day,” he said.

“The festival is not only about the pageant, the rides, or the entertainment but, also about bringing everyone to one place and providing something for the entire family.”

Mr Prasad also took the time to apologise to those whom he might have hurt or offended in anyway when deciding on the venue to host the festival.
