The Tavenui Kaji rugby teams run into the ANZ Stadium, Suva today with the aim of reaching the Vodafone Kaji Rugby finals.

Coach Jemesa Macanawai said yesterday their two aims are to ensure that all grades reach the finals and for players to get the much-needed exposure.

“We want students to get the feel of such competition before they head into high school,” Macanawai said.

“For some of our students this is their first time in Suva but despite a few minor challenges we are happy to be here.”

He added that although they do not have proper training equipment the student are determined to give their best.

“Last year our under-13 team managed to reach the main semi-final where we lost to Suva.

“This year we want all our grades to progress up to the finals.”

Atonia Pasikali of the Taveuni Kaji rugby team hopes that one day rugby will give him and his family a better life.

The Somosomo, Taveuni native was amongst students camping at the Nabua Primary School in Suva preparing for today’s Vodafone Kaji Rugby competition at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

The 12-year-old, winger wants to be like Eroni Sau when he grows up.

Pasikali said coming from a family of six siblings he was grateful to his parents for supporting his rugby dream.

“My father is a casual worker and my mother stays at home but this does not stop them from ensuring that I get what I want to achieve my dream,” he said.

“Right now my dream is to play for Fiji and I know it will not be easy as a lot of hard work is needed.

“One day I will don the white jersey and I’m certain of it as I want to give my family a better life.”

Pasikali said after completing primary school he plans to join Ratu Kadavulevu School and play in the Powerade Super Deans Rugby Championship.
